Leader's Biography 2011:
When his only son Emilio died of cancer shortly before his sixth birthday, Richard Nares found his world shattered. Richard and his wife Diane founded the Emilio Nares Foundation to offer transportation for low-income families whose children were battling cancer at Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego, California. The Emilio Nares Foundation offers families vans that are sterilized, stocked with snacks, and supplied with cleaning materials for times when children suffer reactions to their treatments. Its work has expanded to offer families greatly needed education and advocacy training, healthy meals, support with burial costs, serving families at cancer camps, and added 6,500 new donors to the bone marrow registry. His work has helped the children's hospital offer a variety of services, carefully tailored for the all-consuming battle against pediatric cancer.

Whether he is driving patients to appointments, helping staff the Resource Center or speaking with staff, Richard is constantly available and interested to learn about the needs of the children and families in our care. He has helped us to promote and offer a variety of support services in the Hospital in a way that only a parent could understand. It is this interest and pride in his work that are his greatest contributions to our community.
