Leader’s Biography 1999: Operations Manager, Montefiore Medical Center School Health Program, Bronx, NY Concerned about the high rates of environmental health problems such as lead poisoning and asthma among inner-city children, Charlop worked with community residents and a variety of agencies to craft solutions to these problems. She founded the “Safe House” which provides temporary housing for lead poisoned children, and offers on-site medical services and support groups for families. “Graduates” of the Safe House are trained to become “lead busters” who educate families about the dangers of lead poisoning.
