David Carey
Among his many accomplishments, assisting youth to visualize and attain positive career outcomes has been stellar. Many of these men and women now have jobs in public service and private industry, including law, government, retail and the arts. He is a tireless advocate for employment opportunities, accommodations and supportive services, including public transportation, accessible housing and public access for persons with disabilities.

Leader's Biography 2009: David Carey is chair of Inspire, Human Services Co-op, in Phoenix, Arizona. He was a sophomore in college when a freak gunshot accident left him paralyzed. Determined to live a full life, he went on to complete a degree in physical education. Now an activist for independent living for persons with physical disabilities, he works to improve the design of durable medical equipment and has successfully pressured city governments for safely designed public transportation and effective traffic control for persons with physical disabilities. Carey is an ardent advocate for gun control and is a much-admired and sought-after mentor for others with physical disabilities.
